Professional, Jedi Padawan, future councillor

I quickly came to enjoy the work and loved working with all the different types of people associated with this industry

“3 Years ago, I applied for work with TSNZ as a TC, originally as interim work, till I found “a real job.”

I quickly came to enjoy the work; we got to see some hidden gems that I would never have found in this wonderful country of ours, and I enjoyed not being in the same place all the time. I loved working with all the different types of people associated with this industry - peers, contractors, the public, and teammates. “

6 Months into the job, a challenge was put out: become an STMS - so I put my hand up. From the start, I saw it as a very responsible role, but I was supported by my Ops Manager, knowing I could get assistance as required.

In June 2021, my Ops Manager approached me about taking on a 2IC role. Coming from an “on the road” role, I felt I could better assist our crews and contractors - even with my limited knowledge. I could be their voice to management, and to a degree, I think I achieved that.

In February this year I was offered the Ops Manager role, and reluctantly dived in again.

One thing I have always felt and shared with my peers: I wanted to be ‘professional’ in all aspects of my job. Even my crews now use the term often. They have come to know and understand my standard and that I am proactive in helping them raise their standards daily.

I want contractors, other TTM companies and the public to have confidence in TSNZ to look after them on the road.

I am passionate about seeing the public image of a traffic worker, and what they do, change. We are here to keep everyone safe, not be an inconvenience, not to disrupt their day, and most of us take this responsibility very seriously.

Looking forward, I would love to move into a company counsellor or personal development-type role. The privilege of seeing someone take on a challenge, move forward and develop; seeing their confidence and self-esteem rise, is heart-warming and humbling. humbling. And it shows in their work.

“Looking back these 3 years, my professional and personal growth has been overwhelming and very humbling.”

And in breaking news Jeff has accepted the internal promotion in the new role of Mentor and Assessor for the Upper North Island!
